Advanced Surface Flux Parameterization

چکیده
The objective of this research is to improve the surface flux and boundary layer turbulence parameterization in COAMPS for lowand high-wind events over the ocean in the context of air-sea interaction. Special emphasis will be placed on flux parameterizations in low-wind regimes in collaboration with CBLAST DRI (Coupled Boundary Layer Layers/Air-Sea Transfer Defense Research Initiative) community.

An Empirical Latent Heat Flux Parameterization for the Noah Land Surface Model
Proper partitioning of the surface energy fluxes that drive the evolution of the planetary boundary layer in numerical weather prediction models requires an accurate representation of initial land surface conditions. Unfortunately, soil temperature and moisture observations are unavailable in most areas and routine daily estimates of vegetation coverage and biomass are not easily available. Thi...
متن کاملMeasurement of the Sea Spray Droplet Size Distributions at High Winds
This project will develop cloud droplet probes and phase-Doppler anemometry for measuring sizesegregated droplet concentrations at high wind speeds in the ABL. The data will be used for investigating droplet dynamics in the marine atmospheric boundary layer, characterizing the droplet surface flux source function, and determining the effect spray drops have on air-water surface exchange process...
متن کاملCalculation of the Underground Muon Intensity Crouch Curve from a Parameterization of the Flux at Surface
Utilizing only the vertical muon intensity of the Gaisser parameterization of the muon flux at the surface and propagating this energy spectrum underground according to statistical ionization and radiative energy losses, it is possible to calculate the underground muon intensity Crouch curve. In addition, the primary spectral index of the Gaisser parameterization can be adjusted from E to E sim...
متن کاملEvaluation of Surface Flux Parameterizations with Long-Term ARM Observations
Surface momentum, sensible heat, and latent heat fluxes are critical for atmospheric processes such as clouds and precipitation, and are parameterized in a variety of models ranging from cloud-resolving models to largescale weather and climatemodels. However, direct evaluation of the parameterization schemes for these surface fluxes is rare due to limited observations. This study takes advantag...
متن کاملThe Effect of Different Sea State Dependent Roughness Parameterizations on the Sensitivity of the Atmospheric Circulation in a Regional Model
An alternative approach for the parameterization of the air-sea momentum flux in the marine surface boundary layer was implemented into a regional coupled atmosphere-wave model. The sensitivity of the atmospheric circulation to this new parameterization was assessed and compared to two different approaches using Monte Carlo simulations. Two approaches explicitly use the sea state in the computa...
